Whittington Castle has a long and turbulent history and has been the setting for many historical events, allegations of treachery, disease and a number of bloody and violent battles are associated with Whittington castle.

Situated in North Shropshire, Whittington castle is a motte and bailey castle fortified in 1138 by William Peveril, a supporter of Queen matilda in her fight against King Steven. Queen Matilda's son Henry later went on to become King Henry II, seized the castle and gave it to Roger de Powis.

However, on marriage to Peveril's neice Knight Fulk Fitz-Warine tried to take possesion of the castle and was declared an outlaw in the process. It is believed that his story became the basis for a number of adventure stories including the Legend of Robin Hood.

Knight Fitz-Warine was eventually successful and the castle remained in the the Fitz-Warine family until 1420 during which time Whittington castle contributed to a very rich period in the country's history with various kings taking the throne.

There has been many eye witness accounts of paranormal activity in and around the castle including :

  • Strange white mists and balls of white light appearing from nowhere and feelings of being watched reported by groundsmen.

  • Night watchmen also report sightings of a lone horseman in ancient apparell seen in the castle grounds.

  • Loud unexplained and eerie noises have been heard coming from the locked castle tower on numerous occasions.

  • Childrens faces have been seen peering out of windows watching unsuspecting visitors to the castle.
